About the Course and Hunting License Requirements

Welcome to the official online hunting course of South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. In order to comply with South Carolina hunter education law, all residents born after June 30, 1979, must successfully complete a hunter education course that is approved by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources before a hunting license can be obtained.

There are two study options:

• Ten-hour classroom courses; or
• Independent study through this online course, followed by a proctored exam. Upon passing the online Pre-Certification Exam, you will be eligible to register for the written hunter education test without attending a classroom course. Simply print out your Pre-Certification Exam Certificate, and use it as your admission ticket! Call 1-800-277-4301 to register for the proctored written test.

Online Hunter Education Home Study Steps

1. Study the South Carolina hunter education course material.
2. Take the Practice Test as many times as you like—free of charge—to ensure you've mastered the course material.
3. Take the Pre-Certification Exam. There is a $15 fee for the Pre-Certification Exam, which is collected whether you pass or fail. A score of 80% is required for passing the exam.
4. Upon passing the Pre-Certification Exam, you can print out your official South Carolina Pre-Certification Exam Certificate, which allows you admission to a proctored exam without attending a classroom course.
5. Call 1-800-277-4301 to register for your written exam. You will not be eligible to apply for a hunting license until you have passed the written proctored exam.
